Podcast #189 – Our First Impressions of Undaunted: Stalingrad!

That One Guy You Hate, Undaunted: XCOM, It Is Summer Oh No

In this militaristic episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Tom and Matt have been playing a whole bunch of Undaunted: Stalingrad! A larger, legacy-lite version of the Undaunted system! Is it good? Is it… Not? Does it accurately depict the horrors of war? All this salient information and more awaits…

This Week On Shut Up & Sit Down…

Tom: Hello all! How’s things? I’ve had an eventful weekend of not doing much – though on Sunday I nipped to the beach and took part in the great British tradition of “having some cans”. I returned home to make pasta, and only when my housemate saw the “recipe” I’d hastily scrawled with a felt-tip pen did I realise that maybe I was just a touch too wobbly to be near any sharps. I settled on the other great British tradition of “crisps for dinner”. That’s all for this new edition of “Tom’s Mundane Weekend News”. Tune in next week for hair-raising tales of shower unblocking.

But enough about me, what about us? What are we making for you, hot off the backs of our summer donation drive? This week brings two spicy gems. Thursday bears a review of a modern classic – a game that hasn’t yet been given the review treatment but is near and dear to plenty of people; one that Matt is a new fan of and I’m a touch more sceptical about. How exciting!

Then, on Friday, we’ve got the delayed Undaunted: Stalingrad podcast. I promise we’ll talk about it this week after pushing it back a touch – it’s an enticing box.

That’s this week! What have you been up to, everybody?

Podcast #188 – How Do You Pitch a Game? (w/Tim Clare)

Salt the circle, Pitch me an elevator, Poet card revoked

Ava: Well look at that! It’s an interview. Well something like that. I spent the evenings of the ‘United’ Kingdom’s Game Exposition chatting with my favourite podcaster-poet-editor-writer Tim Clare, then convinced him to get together to have a chat about a thing. We’re offering tips and thoughts on how to ‘pitch a game’, both at a convention, and in your very own home. Do we stay on topic? Occasionally! But hopefully it’s a fun listen.

Go find Tim on twitter or his very own website timclarepoet.co.uk. I genuinely think Death of a Thousand Cuts, and particularly the couch to 80k bootcamp/100 day writing challenge are the absolute best ways to get stuck into creative writing, and his first page critiques (the reason I thought he’d be a great person to speak to about this) are the absolute best writing advice you can get! Check him out, he’s lovely.

I’m hoping to put together a few more interviews and other ‘special’ podcasts over the coming months, so do let us know what you think. Opinions and suggestions welcome to [email protected] or on our website. If it doesn’t sound up your street, do feel free to skip it! It’ll probably be a normal pod with more familiar voices next time you visit!

Everything is fine!!

Gosh, what a normal week we’re having! Another normal week in this wholly normal year. And what could be more normal than our bi-annual reminder that we are actually just humans with gas and electric bills!

We do hope you enjoy this silly bit of video, regardless of whether or not you’re currently cushioned enough to allow you to chuck us a couple of quid.

We love doing this, we love making you smile each week, and we hope that we can continue to do both for the foreseeable future.

Thank you for watching, from the whole team!

This Week On Shut Up & Sit Down…

Tom: Readers, I’ve won, but at what cost. On last week’s podcast, Quinns alluded to our racketball sessions, and his victory over me on the courts. I could not cope with it, and so, I truly put in my all yesterday – and won. I took to Twitter to gloat, but now I am defeated. My legs are killing me. My wrist is totally borked. I’m so very sleepy. Let me tell you about what is happening this week on ‘This Week On Shut Up & Sit Down’ so I can go and lie down.

This week is a nice simple one! Sometime in the Wednesday/Thursday reviewzone, we’ve got not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, but seven games up for review. The theme? That strings them all together? Well, it’s a bit boring. I’ll let you discover it yourself to avoid disappointment.

Friday’s podcast is going to be all about Undaunted: Stalingrad – a first-impressions from myself and Matt talking about this souped-up version of one of the team’s favourite games. This thing is quite something.

That’s it! Eight games are being covered this week, and, I’ll go ahead and say it, all of them are gr-EIGHT! Tee hee. What a time to be alive and playing board games!

What have you been up to, everybody?

Podcast #187 – More Podcasts About Buildings and Villages

The Dry Games Special, Sponsored by Shut Up & Sit Down, The Wad Bizard

In this deeply sponsored episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Tom and Matt are talking about two ferociously dry games. First up is the pastoral human-collector Villagers, and second up is the vertical build-em-up Akropolis. We also take some time to defibrillate the podcast back to life by talking a little bit about Rush Out, our favourite Shut Up & Sit Down video review that came out this week. Enjoy!

Review: Rush Out!

This week’s video has Tom evolving into his final form: BAD WIZARD. It also features a sentient vegetable, and murders with a hammer – so there’s a chance that broadly speaking, things “started to get away from us” a little. This All-vs-1 game of Real-Time Rollin’ game Rush Out! is a treat that surprised us, and it might surprise you!

This Week On Shut Up & Sit Down…

Tom: Hello friends, acquaintances, and the occasional Disqus bot! Welcome to another week in Shut Up & Sit Down, wherein content will be delivered to you on a novelty-sized cheque written out to ‘John BoardGames’. The cheque is covered in content, slathered in the stuff wait actually it’s dripping off the sides ew ew ew ew ew stop it put it down yuck

On Thursday, the tree bears fruits! Videofruits! Best not rush them, leave them to roll off the vine and straight into your waiting arms. Me and Matt just filmed this badboy, so expect something packed with hasty energy. Wonky, silly, and a very good game.

Friday? It’s the day you know and love, absolutely packed to the gills with pod. We’re going to be chatting about a smattering of games played at the UK Games Expo that we didn’t cover live! That includes Villagers, adorning this Mondaypost like a crown of cardboard. Lovely.

No stream this week, unless someone goes fully impulsive. I’ve ended up being ‘right busy’ recently, but hopefully we’ll be back soon with some more nonsense! If you didn’t catch it, Ava’s cupboard-organising stream is still available as a VOD right here!

That’s this week! Hope you’re all well in there, ‘internet people’! Whatcha been up to?

Podcast #186 – Kidney Handling Simulator 2022

The Great Racketball-Off, One Sleepy Intern, Tom is a Failure (again)

In this medical episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Tom and Quinns are donning their scrubs for a lengthy chat about Rush M.D, punting down the Nile in Sobek: 2 Players, and slipping through space in Wormholes!

Apologies for all the drilling noises in this episode – we couldn’t scrub them from the recording without Quinns sounding like a strange squeaky robot!

Have a great weekend, everybody!
